The Guidebook to Serengeti Safari Lodges: Serengeti Pioneer Camp

One of our Safari365 Consultants enjoyed a stay at a Serengeti safari lodge, Serengeti Pioneer Camp, in Tanzania during a recent staff educational trip. She visited the tented camp located in the heart of the Serengeti, where she experienced the camp’s hospitality and activities. Here are her highlights of staying at Serengeti safari lodges.

 Serengeti Pioneer Camp

After a long drive through the savanna landscape, we arrived at this little haven hidden away between the rocky kopjes, blending beautifully with the surrounding nature. Elewana Collection’s Serengeti Pioneer Camp is a tented camp nestled in the heart of the Southern Central Serengeti, one of the incredible Serengeti safari lodges in this area. The location offers prime access to wildlife viewing, especially during the annual Great Migration when it passes through.

Location

When we visited, the camp was tucked into a prime spot nearby the Meru Kopjes. The Serengeti was named “endless plains” in the Maasai language for a clear reason – the rolling savanna, dotted with iconic acacia trees, stretched out as far as my eyes could see. The location of the camp was a great place for excellent game viewing with resident prides of lion as well as leopard often being spotted in the area. The area around the camp transforms from flat grassland landscape to the hilly, rocky kopje.

Accommodation

The camp’s tents are spaced out beneath the hills, with the main dining tent at the foot of the kopje. Upon arrival, we received warm welcomes from the friendly staff. Every staff member I encountered at Pioneer Camp was attentive, helpful, and had a positive attitude. Their service truly epitomises what you can expect from a high-quality lodge in Central Serengeti. The interior design of the tents reflected memories of a bygone safari era, with bespoke wooden furnishings, writing stations, wooden trunks, and old-school safari hats.

Activities

In the evening, we made our way to the main dining tent and enjoyed a great meal. After dinner was one of my highlights. We sat next to the campfire, warming our hands as the logs crackled and the sparks danced through the night air. The star-filled sky twinkled above our heads while we listened to the faint sounds of wildlife in the distance.

The next day began with a hot cup of coffee and an early rise for a morning game drive where we were guided through the sights of the surrounding Serengeti. After the morning game drive activity, you can come back to enjoy lunch and take a relaxing dip in the pool or spend some time relaxing in your tent, before the late afternoon game drive. Staying at this lodge offers unparalleled opportunities for game drives and wildlife viewing.

Overall Thoughts of Your Stay?

Serengeti safari lodges are known for their prime locations and excellent hospitality. Pioneer Camp, in particular, is a lovely destination—one of my favourites in Tanzania—with a great, warm atmosphere. It offers the most amazing views and spectacular sunrises and sunsets that will leave you with unforgettable memories.
