Your Botswana Safari: More Than Just a Game Drive

For the first-time safari goer with a spirit of adventure, Botswana is not just a destination; it’s an arena for discovery. While the classic game drive offers incredible sightings, a truly immersive safari experience invites you to step out of the vehicle and engage with the wilderness on its own terms. This is the essence of an active Botswana safari—a journey that trades passive observation for active participation. Imagine tracking elephants on foot, gliding silently past reed frogs in a traditional canoe, and feeling the ancient pulse of the African bush through the soles of your boots. It’s about transforming your vacation from a spectator sport into a profound, personal connection with nature. For those wondering how to plan a Botswana safari that is both thrilling and accessible, our diverse Botswana safari packages are designed to awaken your inner explorer and create memories that resonate long after you return home.

On Foot in the Wild: Your Guide to a Botswana Walking Safari

A walking safari is one of the most exhilarating experiences Africa has to offer. It’s a complete sensory immersion, where the rustle of leaves could signify a browsing kudu and the scent of wild sage hangs in the air. Safety is paramount, and you are always in the expert hands of a highly trained and armed professional guide. Your guide is a master interpreter of the wild, teaching you to identify tracks, understand animal behavior, and appreciate the intricate details of the ecosystem—from the industrious dung beetle to the towering acacia tree. Addressing common safety concerns, guides adhere to strict protocols, ensuring you maintain a respectful and safe distance from large game. The pace is intentionally leisurely, focusing on observation, not exertion, making it accessible for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. It’s an intimate encounter with the wilderness, a chance to feel, smell, and hear the bush in a way that’s impossible from a vehicle, especially in iconic areas you can explore when you visit Chobe’s exclusive concessions.

The Mokoro Safari: Gliding Through the Okavango Delta

There is no more tranquil yet adventurous way to explore the liquid heart of Botswana than by mokoro. This traditional dugout canoe, expertly poled by a local guide, allows you to glide silently through the crystal-clear channels of the Okavango Delta. From this unique, water-level perspective, the world transforms. You’ll spot tiny, jeweled reed frogs clinging to papyrus stems, watch majestic fish eagles soar overhead, and witness elephants wading peacefully in the shallows. The experience is meditative and thrilling all at once. The gentle lapping of water against the canoe is the only sound, allowing for unparalleled photographic opportunities and wildlife viewing without the noise of an engine. Your poler, often born and raised in the Delta, shares intimate knowledge of this unique wetland ecosystem, pointing out birds, aquatic life, and navigating the channels with inherited skill. This iconic mokoro safari experience is an essential component of any active safari, offering a serene counterpoint to the thrill of walking and the scope of a game drive.

Building Your Daily Active Safari Itinerary

Crafting the perfect active safari is about balance and rhythm. A typical day is a blend of adventure and relaxation, designed to maximize wildlife encounters during peak activity hours. Your day might begin at dawn with a guided walking safari, exploring the awakening bush as the sun rises. After a few hours of tracking and discovery, you’ll return to camp for a hearty brunch and a midday siesta or a dip in the pool during the heat of the day. The afternoon offers another adventure: perhaps a mokoro excursion through the Delta’s shimmering floodplains. As evening approaches, you might embark on a classic 4×4 game drive, which allows you to cover more ground and use a spotlight to search for nocturnal creatures after sunset. This multi-activity approach ensures a comprehensive and dynamic safari. Itineraries like our 8 day Zimbabwe Botswana adventure safari expertly combine these elements, offering a seamless flow of diverse experiences, which can even be adapted for more active families, as highlighted in our family safari guide.

Choosing Your Adventure Safari: Lodges, Fitness & Preparation

When you plan a Botswana safari trip with an active focus, selecting the right accommodation is crucial. Not all lodges are created equal; some specialize in offering authentic, guide-led walking and water-based safaris. We work with camps located in private concessions, which offer the exclusivity and flexibility needed for these activities, away from the crowds of national parks. Regarding fitness, there’s no need for marathon-level conditioning. If you enjoy a brisk walk, you’re ready. Walking safaris typically last 2-3 hours at a gentle pace, with plenty of stops to learn and observe. Your guide will always tailor the activity to the group’s ability. Your essential packing list—a key part of your Botswana safari checklist—should include comfortable, broken-in walking shoes, neutral-colored clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and a reusable water bottle. Our safari experts help you navigate these choices, ensuring you are matched with a camp that fits your adventure style and are perfectly prepared for your first time Botswana safari.

SAFARI 365

On August 24 we visited South Africa, Botswana, Kenya and Tanzania. Four days were spent in the Okavango Delta at two different lodges/Camps. These being Xugana and Xakanaxa. Xugana being more aquatic than the other with Xakanaxa having both aquatic and land safaris. Cannot fault the meals, accommodation, staff and guides in both. All outstanding. In Kenya for an overnight stay only, thankfully. Although spacious and comfortable we did not feel comfortable at The Boma in Nairobi. Stayed in the “compound” for the night. I would have preferred to stay near the airport as this place was about 25 minutes away. Next stop was The African Tulip in Arusha, Tanzania. WOW. A large comfortable room, decor was exceptional, polite and friendly staff that made you feel welcome. Cannot praise them high enough. The next accommodation was at The Marera Valley Lodge. The staff had an attitude problem. My opinion. Once again the room was spacious and comfortable but what let this place down was the meals. Not the best. A seasonal camp on the Serengeti was next for 4 nights. Unbelievable facilities in the middle of nowhere. I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this camp and the land safaris. All the guides we had were different…

JOHANNESBURG AND VICTORIA FALLS

Safari 365 arranged our trip to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, and Chobe National Park, Botswana for my husband and I. We both cannot say enough good things about our experience in these 2 wonderful countries! Safari 365 met us at the airport in Johannesburg, then again to transfer us to Vic Falls. While in Vic Falls, we stayed at Batonka Lodge which was amazing, toured the falls, took a helicopter ride over the falls, had dinner, went on a dinner cruise and several other activities. Safari 365 made all the arrangements for us and it was very easy to just enjoy ourselves. Chobe National Park is amazing – the river cruise and game drive were wonderful and introduced us to the spectacular life in southern Africa. I recommend Safari 365 to anyone who wants to travel to this part of the world!

AFRICAN SAFARI HOLIDAY PLANNED TO PERFECTION

Karen Peasley from Safari 365 did an amazing job to tailor our holiday to our needs. She took great care initially to listen to our ideas, to understand the type of people we were and how we liked to travel and then made suggestions that just absolutely suited us (and our budget). She offered choices of camps and accommodation at each point, allowing us to then do a little research and make a choice and every one of them was, without fail, absolutely perfect. Every connection went like clockwork, every detail was considered. It was an absolute stress-free holiday with all the work done for us as we covered 2 safari camps in Botswana, some days at Vic Falls, a game lodge in Sth Africa, and 5 days along the garden route of Sth Africa with a private driver, and ending with some days in Cape Town. The game parks she suggested, which we chose, were all fabulous and the experience of a lifetime which we had hoped for [We must make special mention of Botswana – the people are delightful, the wildlife experience superb and the food and accommodation terrific]. We can’t wait to return to Africa again…

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time for an active safari in Botswana?

For the ultimate active safari combining walking and water activities, we recommend visiting between June and October. This is Botswana’s dry season, when wildlife congregates around water sources, and the Okavango Delta’s floodwaters are at their peak for unforgettable mokoro canoe excursions.

What’s the difference between a normal safari and an ‘active safari’?

An active safari moves beyond traditional 4×4 game drives to immerse you directly in the environment through guided bush walks and mokoro trips. Based on our 20+ years of experience, this multi-activity approach fosters a much deeper, sensory connection to the wilderness than simply observing from a vehicle.

How long should my first active Botswana safari be?

To fully experience a blend of activities like walking, mokoro excursions, and game drives without feeling rushed, we suggest an itinerary of 7 to 10 days. This duration allows for exploration of diverse ecosystems, such as the Okavango Delta and Chobe’s private concessions, ensuring a comprehensive adventure.

Are walking safaris safe if I’ve never been to Africa before?

Absolutely; safety is paramount and non-negotiable on all the walking safaris we plan. You are always in the hands of a highly-trained, armed professional guide who maintains a respectful distance from wildlife and whose expertise is in interpreting the bush, not provoking it.

How much does an active Botswana safari typically cost?

A well-planned active safari in Botswana’s exclusive private concessions generally costs between $700 and $1,500 USD per person per night. Our Safari365 experts craft itineraries that maximize this investment by selecting intimate camps that specialize in top-tier guiding for these unique active experiences.

Do I need to be extremely fit for a walking or mokoro safari?

Not at all; these activities are designed for immersion, not endurance. Walking safaris are typically 2-3 hours at a leisurely pace with many stops to learn, while a mokoro safari is a tranquil, seated experience, making them accessible to anyone with a standard level of mobility.
