Charles Howie, one of our African Travel Experts, recently spent time in Thornybush Game Reserve, which borders Kruger National Park in South Africa, where he visited Kamara House. This reserve, in the Greater Kruger area, offers exceptional wildlife viewing and an unparalleled luxury experience. Find out more about his experience, insights, and recommendations for those visiting this area.
About Thornybush Game Reserve
I have been visiting the Kruger area on family holidays since my youth, but this was my first visit to the beautiful Thornybush Game Reserve. This region is a favourite among travellers for its renowned wildlife viewing and luxurious accommodations, characteristic of the Greater Kruger area.
The Thornybush Group, established in 1961, was among the first commercial lodges in the Greater Kruger area. It now operates within both the Thornybush and Sabi Sands Private Nature Reserves. In 2017, Thornybush Nature Reserve removed its fences adjacent to the world-famous Kruger National Park, allowing new herds of wildlife to roam freely across the 15,000-hectare reserve. This is one of the many reasons for its enduring popularity.
A Safari Option for Every Traveller
One of the reasons Thornybush is such a popular safari destination is its easy accessibility from both Johannesburg and Cape Town. A short direct flight lands you at Hoedspruit Airport, the nearest to the reserve. From there, a one-hour road transfer takes you to the lodge. Alternatively, if your budget permits, you could charter a flight directly to the reserve’s airstrip, which not only shortens the journey but also provides an aerial view of the incredible landscapes.
Another reason safari enthusiasts favour this reserve is the variety of lodges available, catering to every style and preference. These range from tented accommodations like Thornybush Saseka to more permanent structures like Thornybush Game Lodge.
A Home Away From Home
During my educational visit, I had the pleasure of staying at the stunning Kamara House. Opened in May 2023, Kamara House is the newest addition to the Thornybush Nature Reserve. This exclusive-use house overlooks a small riverbed, providing the perfect spot for wildlife viewing right from the comfort of your deck. The accommodation also features a fire pit and a private plunge pool.
The stay includes services from a private chef and butler, who ensure that all your needs are met. I enjoyed a truly magnificent meal under the African sky, surrounded by the crackle of the fire and the glow of candlelight. The menu featured delicious dishes such as a mouthwatering tempura prawn cocktail, succulent lamb shank, and decadent chocolate mousse, all accompanied by superb local wines.
I would highly recommend Kamara House for multigenerational families or small groups. Its exclusive use means you have the entire accommodation to yourselves, and the ample space and various rooms make it particularly suited for these groups.
Up Close With Wildlife in Thornybush Game Reserve
Thornybush Game Reserve offers an incredible wildlife experience with a range of activities to experience it. You can choose from morning and evening game drives as well as guided bush walks, which is great for spotting the smaller animals and creatures that make up this vibrant ecosystem. Each of these activities are led by expert guides and trackers which the reserve has some of the best.
We had the opportunity to do a morning and evening game drive which I would highly recommend doing both as your sightings will vary depending on the time of day. We had a wonderful guide named Tracy, who is renowned as one of the best guides in the country and serves as the head guide in the northern Thornybush area. Accompanying us on our game drives was Orlando, a tracker with about 30 years of experience, who certainly did not disappoint.
Our adventure began with the tracking of an old leopard along the river bank, where we also encountered elephants en route. Tracy then teased that she had something special in store for us, keeping us in suspense as we navigated the pristine bush. Just 20 minutes later, we were treated to the sight of a pack of 8 wild dogs. Seeing this highly endangered and rarely sighted species was truly magical. We spent about an hour tracking these incredible animals, making for an unforgettable experience.
The following morning, we headed out again. After spotting a variety of herbivores, we noticed several vultures circling in the distance. Recognising this as a sign of a recent kill nearby, we followed the birds and discovered a big male lion feasting on a freshly killed old buffalo. He was soon joined by four lionesses, another 2 males, and 8 cubs of various ages. Observing the pride’s interactions was an incredible experience, offering a unique insight into their dynamics.
Overall Thoughts of Your Stay?
With so much to experience in this beautiful location, I recommend staying for no less than three nights. This duration allows guests ample time to relax by the pool, indulge in a spa treatment, or enjoy an armchair safari from the comfort of their room. Additionally, you will be treated to a variety of dining options, including a boma dinner around the fire, a dinner in the bush, or even a private dinner on your suite’s deck. Moreover, the longer you stay, the stronger the bond you’ll form with your guide and tracker, enhancing your understanding and appreciation of the bush’s wonders.
5 Tips for Visiting the Greater Kruger
- While many travellers choose to visit the area in August and September, I personally prefer to visit in April, May and June. Not only is the weather warmer, but the dry conditions ensure great visibility for wildlife sighting.
- Stay for at least 3 nights to fully experience the reserve and enjoy the activities on offer, such as bushwalks and spa experiences. Travellers visiting for only 2 nights often miss out on experiences or feel rushed.
- Don’t be shy to ask questions! Your guide has a wealth of knowledge about the bush, and taking advantage of the engagements with them will deepen your understanding of the bush and its wildlife, and give you a richer experience.
- Avoid self driving to your lodge: Unless you are very familiar with the area, I would not recommend hiring a car and driving yourself from the airport. Not only is GPS signal patchy, but you are also likely to have to navigate dirt roads. Rather make use of a transfer company for your safety and peace of mind.
- Pack warm clothing, even in summer. While temperatures can soar during the hotter months, you are still likely to feel chilly on morning game drives before they sun has fully risen. A jacket or extra layer will go a long way to keeping you feeling comfortable.
