The Last Word Kitara
The Last Word Kitara is a charming family-run retreat, known for its warm hospitality and thoughtful attention to detail. Nestled in the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, it shares an unfenced border with Kruger National Park, offering seamless access to incredible wildlife and great for those seeking to spot the renowned Big 5. On Arrival
Upon landing at Hoedspruit (Eastgate Airport), we were warmly greeted by our driver from Sable Tours, who handed us a delightful goodie pack for 90 minute drive to The Last Word Kitara. The journey itself felt like a mini safari, with elephants, impalas, and other wildlife casually appearing along the roadside.
From the moment you arrive at the lodge, you’re welcomed into a warm, caring community that goes above and beyond to create unforgettable experiences for their guests. From the spacious and beautifully designed rooms to the complimentary drinks and delicious breakfasts, every aspect of your stay is thoughtfully curated. The Big 5 safari experience here is nothing short of extraordinary. Its remote location provides an intimate connection with the wilderness, free from the usual crowds.
When we arrived, a light lunch and a brief orientation set the tone for the incredible adventure ahead. Our ranger’s enthusiasm and deep knowledge of the wilderness, paired with the sharp-eyed expertise of our tracker, made every game drive an unforgettable experience. On our very first drive, we saw hippos basking in the sun, hyenas on the prowl, and two rhinos grazing alongside a herd of buffalo. The highlight? Watching a majestic herd of elephants cross our path, complete with playful calves clumsily following their mothers. We even enjoyed sundowners while observing the rhinos—an absolutely magical moment. We stopped for drinks and snacks and these were very welcome!
Game Drives
The next morning began bright and early at 6 AM, filled with excitement for what the day would bring – it didn’t disappoint. A leopard walked right beneath our vehicle, giving us a breathtakingly close encounter with this elusive predator. Each sighting deepened our awe and appreciation for the incredible biodiversity of the area and the unique thrill of being on safari.
Dining while at The Last Word Kitara
The food was exceptional—every meal, crafted from fresh, locally sourced ingredients, was a true delight. Meals include cooked or continental breakfast, mid-afternoon meals, and 3-course dinners served on decks overlooking the Klaserie River. We did hear that some other guests enjoyed seeing elephants in the river bed below the lounge deck while they were eating breakfast.
Meals are served in the indoor dining room, on the outdoor viewing decks (weather permitting) or in the traditional boma.
I can recommend relaxing in the lodge’s combination of bar/library/lounge with a refreshing cocktail prior to a delicious dinner.
Experiences
The lodge offers the perfect balance between thrilling safaris and moments of relaxation. With amenities like an infinity pool, yoga mats in the rooms, gym weights in the room and a charming safari deck, unwinding between activities was effortless. Mornings were filled with exhilarating game drives, followed by refreshing swims and evenings spent sharing stories as the sun set. The bush breakfasts and dinners are highly recommended, as is the helicopter flip, which provides an incredible perspective on the vastness of this stunning region and its ecosystem, something I hope to do on my return to this incredible place.
