Expanding Your Family’s Safari Horizons: The Allure of a Multi-Destination Botswana Safari
Planning a family safari is about crafting a narrative—a shared story that will be retold for years. For families with children aged 8 to 16, this is a golden window to create a truly impactful adventure. While a singular safari is incredible, expanding the journey into a multi-destination experience transforms it into an epic. The concept is simple yet powerful: anchor your trip in the unparalleled wildlife sanctuary of Botswana and then add a contrasting, iconic wonder like Victoria Falls. This approach maximizes your long-haul travel, turning one amazing trip into two distinct, unforgettable experiences. It provides a richer educational tapestry, contrasting wetland ecosystems with geological marvels, and justifies the investment by delivering a comprehensive Southern African adventure. Crafting the Core Safari Experience: Why Botswana is the Perfect Family Safari Anchor
Botswana stands out as a premier and safe safari destination, making it an ideal anchor for your family’s adventure. For children old enough to appreciate the nuances of the wild, its offering is unparalleled. The Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, provides a unique water-based safari experience. Gliding silently through the channels in a mokoro (traditional canoe) offers an intimate, eye-level perspective on wildlife that captivates teens and pre-teens. This contrasts brilliantly with the classic 4×4 game drives in private concessions, where expert guides can tailor sightings to your family’s interests. Further north, a visit to Chobe National Park delivers astounding wildlife density, famous for its colossal elephant herds. The combination of land and water activities, from boat cruises on the Chobe River to guided bush walks, keeps the safari dynamic and engaging. This variety ensures there is a perfect activity for every family member, making it much more than just a sightseeing trip; it’s an interactive education in one of the world’s last great wildernesses and a key part of our types of safaris offering.
The Cross-Border Safari Extension: Seamlessly Connecting Your Botswana Safari Adventure
One of the biggest concerns for families planning a multi-destination trip is logistical overwhelm. Fortunately, the connection between Botswana’s safari heartland and Victoria Falls is one of the most seamless cross-border routes in Africa. The journey is most commonly made from Kasane, the gateway town to Chobe National Park. From here, a pre-arranged road transfer to either the Zimbabwean or Zambian side of Victoria Falls takes only 1.5 to 2 hours, including border formalities. Your Safari365 specialist handles all the details, ensuring a private, air-conditioned vehicle is waiting. The border crossing at Kazungula is straightforward; our team preps you with all necessary visa information, which for many nationalities can be obtained upon arrival. This removes the guesswork and stress, transforming what seems complex into a simple, scenic drive. This smooth transition allows you to move from a morning game drive in Botswana to witnessing the smoke-that-thunders by afternoon, maximizing your precious holiday time without exhausting the kids.
A Sample Multi-Destination Family Safari Itinerary: Pacing Your Journey
A well-paced itinerary is crucial for family harmony. Rushing from place to place leads to burnout, but a thoughtfully structured journey creates a perfect rhythm. Here’s a blueprint that balances adventure with relaxation. Days 1-3: Okavango Delta. Fly into a family-friendly camp deep in the Delta. Focus on a mix of mokoro excursions and 4×4 game drives, introducing the kids to the unique ecosystem. Days 4-6: Chobe Riverfront. Take a light aircraft flight to Kasane and transfer to a lodge along the Chobe River. Enjoy water-based safaris to see elephants swimming and vast herds gathering at the water’s edge, plus classic game drives. Our 6 day Chobe Okavango Delta safari itinerary provides an excellent foundation for this Botswana-centric portion. Days 7-8: Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. A seamless road transfer brings you to the Falls. Spend the afternoon exploring the rainforest paths and the next day enjoying age-appropriate adventures like a canopy tour or a sunset cruise on the Zambezi, offering a thrilling finale to your African odyssey.
Key Logistical Considerations for Your Multi-Destination Family Safari
Successfully planning a multi-destination family safari hinges on a few key decisions. First, safari timing is paramount. Botswana’s dry season (May to October) is ideal, offering pleasant weather and concentrated wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources. This timing aligns perfectly with prime viewing conditions at Victoria Falls. Second, lodge selection is critical. We prioritize properties with family suites or interconnecting tents, dedicated family guides, and flexible programs. Some lodges offer Young Explorers clubs that provide educational and fun activities for kids. Third, budgeting for a multi-destination trip requires understanding the value. The added cost of transfers and an extra location is offset by the immense value of maximizing your long-haul flight and creating a more diverse, enriching experience. A comprehensive family safari guide can be an invaluable resource, and having a detailed Botswana safari checklist helps ensure no detail is overlooked as you plan a Botswana safari trip for your family.

SAFARI 365
On August 24 we visited South Africa, Botswana, Kenya and Tanzania. Four days were spent in the Okavango Delta at two different lodges/Camps. These being Xugana and Xakanaxa. Xugana being more aquatic than the other with Xakanaxa having both aquatic and land safaris. Cannot fault the meals, accommodation, staff and guides in both. All outstanding. In Kenya for an overnight stay only, thankfully. Although spacious and comfortable we did not feel comfortable at The Boma in Nairobi. Stayed in the “compound” for the night. I would have preferred to stay near the airport as this place was about 25 minutes away. Next stop was The African Tulip in Arusha, Tanzania. WOW. A large comfortable room, decor was exceptional, polite and friendly staff that made you feel welcome. Cannot praise them high enough. The next accommodation was at The Marera Valley Lodge. The staff had an attitude problem. My opinion. Once again the room was spacious and comfortable but what let this place down was the meals. Not the best. A seasonal camp on the Serengeti was next for 4 nights. Unbelievable facilities in the middle of nowhere. I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this camp and the land safaris. All the guides we had were different…

JOHANNESBURG AND VICTORIA FALLS
Safari 365 arranged our trip to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, and Chobe National Park, Botswana for my husband and I. We both cannot say enough good things about our experience in these 2 wonderful countries! Safari 365 met us at the airport in Johannesburg, then again to transfer us to Vic Falls. While in Vic Falls, we stayed at Batonka Lodge which was amazing, toured the falls, took a helicopter ride over the falls, had dinner, went on a dinner cruise and several other activities. Safari 365 made all the arrangements for us and it was very easy to just enjoy ourselves. Chobe National Park is amazing – the river cruise and game drive were wonderful and introduced us to the spectacular life in southern Africa. I recommend Safari 365 to anyone who wants to travel to this part of the world!

AFRICAN SAFARI HOLIDAY PLANNED TO PERFECTION
Karen Peasley from Safari 365 did an amazing job to tailor our holiday to our needs. She took great care initially to listen to our ideas, to understand the type of people we were and how we liked to travel and then made suggestions that just absolutely suited us (and our budget). She offered choices of camps and accommodation at each point, allowing us to then do a little research and make a choice and every one of them was, without fail, absolutely perfect. Every connection went like clockwork, every detail was considered. It was an absolute stress-free holiday with all the work done for us as we covered 2 safari camps in Botswana, some days at Vic Falls, a game lodge in Sth Africa, and 5 days along the garden route of Sth Africa with a private driver, and ending with some days in Cape Town. The game parks she suggested, which we chose, were all fabulous and the experience of a lifetime which we had hoped for [We must make special mention of Botswana – the people are delightful, the wildlife experience superb and the food and accommodation terrific]. We can’t wait to return to Africa again…
