This is where expert itinerary planning becomes your most valuable tool. A well-crafted route ensures you don’t just see Botswana, but you experience its rhythm. Understanding how to plan a Botswana safari isn’t about ticking boxes; it’s about creating a seamless journey that aligns with your wildlife dreams. Mapping Your Safari: Botswana’s Key Safari Regions & Wildlife Hotspots
Feeling overwhelmed by the options is a common hurdle when you plan a Botswana safari trip for the first time. The secret is understanding that each region offers a unique piece of the puzzle. The Okavango Delta is the jewel in Botswana’s crown, a wetland paradise where you can glide silently in a mokoro (dugout canoe) past hippos and crocodiles. Adjacent to it, the Moremi Game Reserve protects a significant portion of the Delta and is legendary for its high density of predators, including lions, leopards, and wild dogs. Further north, the Chobe region is a world of its own. Here, you’ll want to visit Chobe National Park, famous for hosting the largest concentration of elephants on Earth, best viewed on a Chobe River cruise. For a starkly beautiful contrast, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve offers a semi-arid landscape where desert-adapted species like the black-maned lion and cheetah roam vast, silent plains.
The Rhythm of the Wild: How Safari Seasons Shape Your Botswana Route
Your safari experience is deeply connected to Botswana’s two primary seasons, and understanding them is crucial for your Botswana safari planning guide. The Dry Season (May to October) is peak safari time. Water sources shrink, concentrating wildlife around permanent rivers and waterholes, making for phenomenal game viewing. This is also when the Okavango Delta’s floodwaters, arriving from Angola, are at their highest, creating the ultimate water-based safari experience. Conversely, the Green Season (November to April) brings dramatic afternoon thunderstorms that transform the landscape into a lush, vibrant Eden. This period is when many animals give birth, attracting predators and offering incredible photographic opportunities with fewer crowds. While some tracks can become impassable, it’s a spectacular time for birding and witnessing nature’s renewal. Choosing the right season depends entirely on the types of safaris and experiences you’re seeking, from classic game drives to specialized mokoro excursions.
Classic Botswana Safari Routes: Sample Itineraries for Your First Safari
To help you visualize your adventure, here are two classic routes that effectively combine Botswana’s highlights, solving the fear of ‘missing out’ on a key experience.
- The 7-Day ‘Delta & River’ Safari: This is the quintessential first-timer’s itinerary. Start with three nights in the Chobe National Park area, enjoying morning game drives and afternoon river cruises to see the immense elephant herds. Then, fly into the heart of the Okavango Delta for four nights at a water-based or combination camp. Here, you’ll trade the vehicle for a mokoro and motorboat, exploring the labyrinthine channels and islands. This combination delivers both iconic big-game viewing and the unique magic of the Delta.
- The 10-Day ‘Ultimate Botswana’ Safari: For a more comprehensive journey, this route adds Moremi’s predator-rich lands. Spend three nights in Chobe, followed by a light aircraft flight to a camp in the Moremi Game Reserve for three nights of intense big cat tracking. Finish with four nights in a private concession deep within the Okavango for an exclusive and intimate safari finale. Our 6 day Chobe Okavango Delta safari itinerary offers a fantastic blueprint for this style of trip.
Connecting the Dots: Your Safari Logistics & Transfer Guide
A common mistake when planning a first time Botswana safari is underestimating the time and complexity of moving between remote camps. The country’s best wilderness areas are not connected by paved roads; instead, the ‘safari circuit’ relies on a network of light aircraft flights. These bush planes are an experience in themselves, offering breathtaking aerial views of the landscapes below. Upon landing at a bush airstrip, you’ll be met by your guide in a specialized 4×4 safari vehicle for a game drive transfer to your camp. In the Okavango Delta, transfers might even involve a boat or mokoro journey. Meticulous planning is essential to ensure these connections are seamless, maximizing your time for wildlife viewing. This smooth logistical flow is a hallmark of an expertly planned trip and is vital for all traveler types, as our family safari guide explains, ensuring a stress-free adventure for everyone.

SAFARI 365
On August 24 we visited South Africa, Botswana, Kenya and Tanzania. Four days were spent in the Okavango Delta at two different lodges/Camps. These being Xugana and Xakanaxa. Xugana being more aquatic than the other with Xakanaxa having both aquatic and land safaris. Cannot fault the meals, accommodation, staff and guides in both. All outstanding. In Kenya for an overnight stay only, thankfully. Although spacious and comfortable we did not feel comfortable at The Boma in Nairobi. Stayed in the “compound” for the night. I would have preferred to stay near the airport as this place was about 25 minutes away. Next stop was The African Tulip in Arusha, Tanzania. WOW. A large comfortable room, decor was exceptional, polite and friendly staff that made you feel welcome. Cannot praise them high enough. The next accommodation was at The Marera Valley Lodge. The staff had an attitude problem. My opinion. Once again the room was spacious and comfortable but what let this place down was the meals. Not the best. A seasonal camp on the Serengeti was next for 4 nights. Unbelievable facilities in the middle of nowhere. I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this camp and the land safaris. All the guides we had were different…

JOHANNESBURG AND VICTORIA FALLS
Safari 365 arranged our trip to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, and Chobe National Park, Botswana for my husband and I. We both cannot say enough good things about our experience in these 2 wonderful countries! Safari 365 met us at the airport in Johannesburg, then again to transfer us to Vic Falls. While in Vic Falls, we stayed at Batonka Lodge which was amazing, toured the falls, took a helicopter ride over the falls, had dinner, went on a dinner cruise and several other activities. Safari 365 made all the arrangements for us and it was very easy to just enjoy ourselves. Chobe National Park is amazing – the river cruise and game drive were wonderful and introduced us to the spectacular life in southern Africa. I recommend Safari 365 to anyone who wants to travel to this part of the world!

AFRICAN SAFARI HOLIDAY PLANNED TO PERFECTION
Karen Peasley from Safari 365 did an amazing job to tailor our holiday to our needs. She took great care initially to listen to our ideas, to understand the type of people we were and how we liked to travel and then made suggestions that just absolutely suited us (and our budget). She offered choices of camps and accommodation at each point, allowing us to then do a little research and make a choice and every one of them was, without fail, absolutely perfect. Every connection went like clockwork, every detail was considered. It was an absolute stress-free holiday with all the work done for us as we covered 2 safari camps in Botswana, some days at Vic Falls, a game lodge in Sth Africa, and 5 days along the garden route of Sth Africa with a private driver, and ending with some days in Cape Town. The game parks she suggested, which we chose, were all fabulous and the experience of a lifetime which we had hoped for [We must make special mention of Botswana – the people are delightful, the wildlife experience superb and the food and accommodation terrific]. We can’t wait to return to Africa again…
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to visit Botswana for a safari?
The prime safari season is during the dry months of May to October, when wildlife congregates around shrinking water sources for spectacular viewing. Our experts particularly favor this period as the Okavango Delta’s floodwaters are at their peak, allowing for the quintessential mokoro and boating safaris.

For a fantastic first trip, we recommend a 7-day safari combining the elephant herds of Chobe National Park with the unique waterways of the Okavango Delta.
