Planning your Botswana honeymoon safari? The perfect time depends on your dream activities, from peak wildlife viewing in the dry season to seeing newborn animals in the lush green season. With 20+ years of expertise, our specialists will craft your ideal romantic itinerary. Let’s start planning your unforgettable adventure.
Why Your Botswana Honeymoon Safari Timing is Everything
Botswana is the pinnacle of romantic, wild, and exclusive safari destinations, making it an unparalleled choice for a honeymoon. But planning the perfect trip goes beyond choosing luxurious lodges; it begins with a single, crucial question: when to go? In Botswana, this isn’t about avoiding a rainy day. It’s about timing your journey to coincide with the specific safari experiences that will define your once-in-a-lifetime adventure. The best time for you depends entirely on whether your dream involves gliding silently through flooded channels in a mokoro, witnessing enormous herds at a shrinking waterhole, or capturing photos of newborn animals in a verdant paradise. This guide will demystify the seasons, helping you personalize your dream safari from our range of Botswana safari packages. Deciding on your ideal season is the first step in crafting a journey to magical places, so let’s visit Okavango and beyond.
The Dry Season Safari (May-Oct): Epic Wildlife Spectacles
For many, the dry season represents the quintessential Botswana safari. From May through October, the landscape dries out, forcing wildlife to congregate in massive numbers around the remaining permanent water sources of the Okavango Delta, Linyanti, and Chobe River. With sparse vegetation, spotting animals becomes wonderfully easy, making this the ideal time for first-time safari-goers and those determined to see iconic predators in action. This is the season of thrilling 4×4 game drives where you might witness lions stalking buffalo, leopards lounging in sausage trees, or a pack of endangered wild dogs on the hunt. The sheer density of elephants in Chobe National Park is a sight to behold. For honeymooners, this season offers the thrill of dramatic, predictable wildlife encounters that create unforgettable shared memories. An itinerary like our 8 nights Victoria Falls to Delta safari is perfectly timed to capitalize on these spectacular game-viewing conditions, ensuring your days are filled with awe-inspiring sightings.
The Green Season Safari (Nov-Apr): A Lush & Intimate Escape
Often called the ‘secret season’, these summer months offer a completely different, yet equally magical, safari experience perfect for honeymooners seeking intimacy and romance. The arrival of the rains transforms the arid landscape into a vibrant, emerald wonderland. While wildlife is more dispersed, this is the birthing season. You’ll be treated to heartwarming sights of wobbly-legged baby impala, zebra, and wildebeest, which in turn attract opportunistic predators. The benefits are immense: fewer visitors mean a more private and exclusive safari feel, and accommodation rates are often lower. For photographers, the dramatic afternoon thunderstorms create incredible light and moody skies. This is also when the zebra migration heads towards the super-lush grasses of the Makgadikgadi Pans and birdwatching is simply phenomenal, with migratory species present in full breeding plumage. It’s a testament to the different types of safaris available, proving Botswana’s allure is year-round.
Beyond Game Drives: Matching Your Safari Activities to the Season
Your list of desired Botswana safari activities is what truly dictates your travel dates. Understanding seasonality is key to avoiding disappointment. The iconic mokoro safari experience—gliding silently through the Okavango Delta’s channels in a traditional dugout canoe—is entirely dependent on water levels. These levels, fed by rains in the Angolan highlands, are ironically highest during the dry season, peaking between June and August. Conversely, if your dream is to race across the vast, otherworldly Makgadikgadi Salt Pans on a quad bike, this adventure is only possible when the pans are bone dry (approximately July to October). Walking safaris, one of the most intimate Botswana wildlife activities, are best enjoyed during the dry season when lower vegetation improves visibility and safety. When planning what to do on a Botswana safari, aligning your activities with the right season is the secret to a flawless itinerary. Our experts specialize in crafting trips around the specific things to do in Botswana that excite you most.

SAFARI 365
On August 24 we visited South Africa, Botswana, Kenya and Tanzania. Four days were spent in the Okavango Delta at two different lodges/Camps. These being Xugana and Xakanaxa. Xugana being more aquatic than the other with Xakanaxa having both aquatic and land safaris. Cannot fault the meals, accommodation, staff and guides in both. All outstanding. In Kenya for an overnight stay only, thankfully. Although spacious and comfortable we did not feel comfortable at The Boma in Nairobi. Stayed in the “compound” for the night. I would have preferred to stay near the airport as this place was about 25 minutes away. Next stop was The African Tulip in Arusha, Tanzania. WOW. A large comfortable room, decor was exceptional, polite and friendly staff that made you feel welcome. Cannot praise them high enough. The next accommodation was at The Marera Valley Lodge. The staff had an attitude problem. My opinion. Once again the room was spacious and comfortable but what let this place down was the meals. Not the best. A seasonal camp on the Serengeti was next for 4 nights. Unbelievable facilities in the middle of nowhere. I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this camp and the land safaris. All the guides we had were different…

JOHANNESBURG AND VICTORIA FALLS
Safari 365 arranged our trip to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, and Chobe National Park, Botswana for my husband and I. We both cannot say enough good things about our experience in these 2 wonderful countries! Safari 365 met us at the airport in Johannesburg, then again to transfer us to Vic Falls. While in Vic Falls, we stayed at Batonka Lodge which was amazing, toured the falls, took a helicopter ride over the falls, had dinner, went on a dinner cruise and several other activities. Safari 365 made all the arrangements for us and it was very easy to just enjoy ourselves. Chobe National Park is amazing – the river cruise and game drive were wonderful and introduced us to the spectacular life in southern Africa. I recommend Safari 365 to anyone who wants to travel to this part of the world!

AFRICAN SAFARI HOLIDAY PLANNED TO PERFECTION
Karen Peasley from Safari 365 did an amazing job to tailor our holiday to our needs. She took great care initially to listen to our ideas, to understand the type of people we were and how we liked to travel and then made suggestions that just absolutely suited us (and our budget). She offered choices of camps and accommodation at each point, allowing us to then do a little research and make a choice and every one of them was, without fail, absolutely perfect. Every connection went like clockwork, every detail was considered. It was an absolute stress-free holiday with all the work done for us as we covered 2 safari camps in Botswana, some days at Vic Falls, a game lodge in Sth Africa, and 5 days along the garden route of Sth Africa with a private driver, and ending with some days in Cape Town. The game parks she suggested, which we chose, were all fabulous and the experience of a lifetime which we had hoped for [We must make special mention of Botswana – the people are delightful, the wildlife experience superb and the food and accommodation terrific]. We can’t wait to return to Africa again…
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the absolute best time for a Botswana honeymoon safari?
The ‘best’ time is deeply personal and depends on your dream experience, a detail we’ve perfected over 20 years. For guaranteed, high-density wildlife and predator action, we recommend the dry season from September to October; for lush scenery, newborn animals, and intimate privacy, the ‘secret’ green season from January to February is magical.
What makes a Botswana safari so special and romantic for a honeymoon?
Botswana offers an unparalleled blend of wild romance and exclusivity, with vast private concessions that mean you rarely see other vehicles. You can glide silently through the Okavango Delta on a private mokoro canoe or enjoy sundowners overlooking a waterhole packed with elephants. Our expertise lies in securing these intimate moments away from the crowds.
How many days do we need for a proper Botswana honeymoon safari?
To truly immerse yourselves in Botswana’s diverse ecosystems without feeling rushed, we advise a minimum of 7 to 10 nights. This allows you to combine the unique waterways of the Okavango Delta with the prolific wildlife of a drier region like the Linyanti or Chobe Riverfront. We craft itineraries that flow at a relaxed, romantic pace perfect for a honeymoon.
We really want to do a mokoro canoe safari. When should we book?
This is a critical planning detail many overlook: the iconic mokoro experience depends on floodwaters from Angola, which peak during Botswana’s dry season. For the ultimate water-based safari, you must travel between June and August. We ensure your itinerary is perfectly timed to match your most desired activities.
Is it better to see predators in the dry season or baby animals in the green season?
This choice defines your safari. The dry season (May-Oct) offers intense predator drama as animals are forced to congregate at waterholes, guaranteeing thrilling sightings. Conversely, the green season (Nov-Apr) is the birthing season, offering heartwarming scenes of wobbly-legged fawns and calves, which in turn attract opportunistic predators in a lush, vibrant landscape.
How do we choose between the Okavango Delta and the Chobe River for our honeymoon?
You don’t have to choose; in fact, combining them creates the ultimate honeymoon. The Okavango Delta offers serene, water-based activities and exclusivity, while the Chobe Riverfront is famous for its staggering concentration of elephants, especially from August to October. Our custom itineraries are designed to give you the best of both these world-class, yet very different, destinations.
