Unlock the secret to your perfect Botswana family safari by matching seasonal activities to your family’s dreams. Whether you seek the Dry Season’s guaranteed wildlife action or the Green Season’s vibrant new life, our experts use 20+ years of experience to design your ideal trip. Let’s start planning your unforgettable adventure.

Why Your Botswana Family Safari Timing is Everything

Planning a family safari to Botswana can feel overwhelming, with endless advice about the ‘best’ time to go. The secret? The perfect time isn’t a single month on the calendar; it’s about matching the season to the specific safari experiences that will create lifelong memories for your family. For children aged 8-16, this is crucial. Do they dream of non-stop action and ticking off iconic animals, or are they curious explorers fascinated by new life and dramatic landscapes? Botswana offers two distinct safari seasons—the Dry Season and the Green Season—each presenting a unique set of adventures. Understanding the difference is the first step in designing an unforgettable journey from our diverse range of Botswana safari packages. This guide will help you decide which season aligns with your family’s dream safari, ensuring every moment is filled with wonder and excitement.

The Prime-Time Safari: Action-Packed Family Adventures in the Dry Season (May-Oct)

For the classic, high-octane safari experience that many first-time families dream of, the Dry Season is unparalleled. From May to October, rainfall is scarce, and the landscape transforms. As seasonal water sources disappear, wildlife is forced to congregate around permanent rivers and waterholes. This concentration makes for spectacular, frequent, and easily predictable game viewing—a massive advantage for keeping younger kids engaged. Imagine your family watching vast herds of elephants quench their thirst along the riverbanks when you visit Chobe, or witnessing a pride of lions stalking zebra at a crowded waterhole. The skies are generally clear and blue, the air is less humid, and the thinner vegetation makes spotting animals easier for everyone. This is the Botswana of documentaries, offering an action-packed itinerary that is perfectly captured in trips like our 8 nights Victoria Falls to Delta safari, delivering guaranteed thrills and bucket-list sightings.

The Secret Season Safari: A Lush Botswana Adventure for Curious Families (Nov-Apr)

The Green Season, from November to April, is Botswana’s best-kept secret and a paradise for discerning or returning safari families. After the first rains, the parched landscape erupts into a vibrant, emerald wonderland. This is the season of new life. Thousands of wildebeest, zebra, and impala give birth, and watching the wobbly first steps of their young is a profoundly moving experience for all ages. The air fills with the colour and sound of migratory birds arriving in their breeding plumage, a delight for budding naturalists. While you can expect brief, dramatic afternoon thunderstorms, they rarely disrupt safari activities and instead create breathtaking, moody skies perfect for photography—a fantastic angle for creative teens. This season offers a different kind of magic, focusing on the intricate details of the ecosystem and providing a lush, beautiful backdrop for your family’s unique Botswana safari experiences.

What’s Your Family’s Safari Vibe? A Seasonal Activity Showdown

Deciding when to go comes down to the specific Botswana wildlife activities your family wants to enjoy. The two seasons offer a different menu of adventures, helping you pinpoint the perfect timing for your trip. This showdown of the top things to do in Botswana will help you choose:

Dry Season (May-Oct) Vibe: Classic Action & Exploration

High-Impact Game Drives: Unrivaled for seeing large herds and predator-prey interactions at water sources.

Walking Safaris: With less dense bush, this is often a better time for guided walks (for older teens), offering a thrilling, ground-level perspective.

Incredible Stargazing: The clear, crisp winter nights reveal the Milky Way in breathtaking detail, free from light pollution.

Green Season (Nov-Apr) Vibe: Vibrant & Immersive

Exceptional Birdwatching: A dream for any aspiring ornithologist, with hundreds of migratory species present.

Mokoro Safaris: Higher water levels in the Okavango Delta make this the prime time for a serene mokoro safari experience, gliding silently through lily-filled waterways.

Photography: The combination of baby animals, dramatic skies, and lush green backgrounds is a photographer’s dream. Exploring the different types of safaris can further refine your choice.

A Safari for Every Age: Tailoring Your Botswana Itinerary to Your Kids

One of the biggest concerns for parents is keeping children of different ages engaged. Botswana’s seasons cater brilliantly to the 8-16 age range. For younger children (8-12), the Dry Season’s predictable, high-frequency sightings are a perfect match for shorter attention spans. The constant action of seeing elephants, giraffes, and hippos means there’s never a dull moment. For curious teens (13-16) with a deeper interest in biology and photography, the Green Season can be more rewarding. The narrative of new life, the complexities of the ecosystem, and the unique behaviors of animals with their young provide a richer, more educational experience. Regardless of the season you choose, a Safari365 expert ensures your trip is perfectly tailored. We select family-friendly lodges with specialized guides who are masters at connecting with younger guests, turning every game drive into an interactive lesson and every moment into a cherished memory. They know precisely what to do on a Botswana safari to captivate every member of your family.

SAFARI 365

On August 24 we visited South Africa, Botswana, Kenya and Tanzania. Four days were spent in the Okavango Delta at two different lodges/Camps. These being Xugana and Xakanaxa. Xugana being more aquatic than the other with Xakanaxa having both aquatic and land safaris. Cannot fault the meals, accommodation, staff and guides in both. All outstanding. In Kenya for an overnight stay only, thankfully. Although spacious and comfortable we did not feel comfortable at The Boma in Nairobi. Stayed in the “compound” for the night. I would have preferred to stay near the airport as this place was about 25 minutes away. Next stop was The African Tulip in Arusha, Tanzania. WOW. A large comfortable room, decor was exceptional, polite and friendly staff that made you feel welcome. Cannot praise them high enough. The next accommodation was at The Marera Valley Lodge. The staff had an attitude problem. My opinion. Once again the room was spacious and comfortable but what let this place down was the meals. Not the best. A seasonal camp on the Serengeti was next for 4 nights. Unbelievable facilities in the middle of nowhere. I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this camp and the land safaris. All the guides we had were different…

JOHANNESBURG AND VICTORIA FALLS

Safari 365 arranged our trip to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, and Chobe National Park, Botswana for my husband and I. We both cannot say enough good things about our experience in these 2 wonderful countries! Safari 365 met us at the airport in Johannesburg, then again to transfer us to Vic Falls. While in Vic Falls, we stayed at Batonka Lodge which was amazing, toured the falls, took a helicopter ride over the falls, had dinner, went on a dinner cruise and several other activities. Safari 365 made all the arrangements for us and it was very easy to just enjoy ourselves. Chobe National Park is amazing – the river cruise and game drive were wonderful and introduced us to the spectacular life in southern Africa. I recommend Safari 365 to anyone who wants to travel to this part of the world!

AFRICAN SAFARI HOLIDAY PLANNED TO PERFECTION

Karen Peasley from Safari 365 did an amazing job to tailor our holiday to our needs. She took great care initially to listen to our ideas, to understand the type of people we were and how we liked to travel and then made suggestions that just absolutely suited us (and our budget). She offered choices of camps and accommodation at each point, allowing us to then do a little research and make a choice and every one of them was, without fail, absolutely perfect. Every connection went like clockwork, every detail was considered. It was an absolute stress-free holiday with all the work done for us as we covered 2 safari camps in Botswana, some days at Vic Falls, a game lodge in Sth Africa, and 5 days along the garden route of Sth Africa with a private driver, and ending with some days in Cape Town. The game parks she suggested, which we chose, were all fabulous and the experience of a lifetime which we had hoped for [We must make special mention of Botswana – the people are delightful, the wildlife experience superb and the food and accommodation terrific]. We can’t wait to return to Africa again…

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to go on a family safari in Botswana?

The ‘best’ time depends entirely on your family’s interests. For non-stop, classic wildlife viewing that keeps younger kids engaged, we recommend the Dry Season (May-October). For curious teens fascinated by new life, birding, and photography, the lush Green Season (November-April) is a magical and often overlooked choice.

What animals will my children get to see in Botswana?

In the Dry Season, expect incredible sightings of large elephant herds and predator action around waterholes. The Green Season offers the unique magic of witnessing thousands of newborn animals like impala and zebra taking their first steps, alongside phenomenal migratory bird-watching.

How long should our family safari in Botswana be?

With over 20 years of experience, we find that an 8 to 10-night safari is ideal for families to fully experience diverse areas like the Okavango Delta and Chobe without feeling rushed. This duration allows for a comfortable pace, minimizing travel fatigue while enjoying a rich mix of safari activities.

What makes a Botswana safari special for children and teens?

Botswana is exceptional because its seasons cater to different age groups. The Dry Season’s predictable action is perfect for the shorter attention spans of kids aged 8-12, while the Green Season’s focus on ecology and baby animals provides a richer, more educational experience for teens.
