Fish River Canyon
Namibia's Natural Wonder
Located in south-east Namibia, Fish River Canyon is a natural wonder and the second-largest canyon in the world. Spanning an incredible 800 kilometres (497 miles), it is renowned for its dramatic landscapes and challenging hiking trails. This iconic destination forms part of the Ai-Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, making it a must-visit for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Known as one of Africa’s toughest hiking trails, it is equally celebrated for its breathtaking beauty and unique ecosystem.
Hiking is the only way to truly explore the depths of this awe-inspiring canyon, as day trips through the canyon itself are not permitted. The 85-kilometre (52-mile) trail typically takes 4 to 5 days to complete, offering adventurers the option of self-guided or guided tours. Along the way, hikers are treated to stunning views of rugged cliffs, winding riverbeds, and diverse terrain. While the trail is a favourite among experienced hikers, the canyon also attracts photographers and nature enthusiasts who come to capture its striking scenery and rich wildlife.
Discover The Wildlife
In Fish River Canyon
The canyon is home to a variety of animals, some of which are challenging to spot due to the vastness of the terrain. Herds of Hartmann’s mountain zebra roam the area, alongside small groups of kudu, baboons, and dassies (rock rabbits). Occasionally, visitors might even glimpse a leopard, though these sightings are rare. Birdlife is abundant, with herons and cormorants frequently seen near the water. Overhead, martins and mountain wheatears keep a watchful eye on hikers as they traverse the rocky paths. The diverse wildlife, combined with the canyon’s stunning landscapes, makes this an unforgettable destination for those seeking adventure and natural beauty.
