Fish River Canyon
Namibia's Natural Wonder
Located in the south-east region of the country, this naturally occurring wonder holds the title of being the second largest canyon in the world, spanning a distance of 800 kilometres (497 miles) long. Well known by avid hikers as being one of the hardest trails in Africa, it is also one of the most beautiful, forming part of the Ai-Ais Ritchersveld Transfrontier Park.
Hiking is the best way to explore this vast and breath-taking canyon, as day visits through the canyon are not permitted. The trail itself spans 85 kilometres (52 miles) and takes roughly 4 to 5 days, and it can be a self-guided or guided tour. This spot is not just popular among hikers; it is also popular among photographers and nature enthusiasts, and for good reason.
Here, which is often difficult to spot, you will find herds of Hartmann’s mountain zebra, small groups of kudu, baboons, dassies (rock rabbits), and, on rare occasions, leopards. Birds are also common in this area, with herons and cormorants being the most abundant, but if you look up on your hike, you will most likely spot martins and/or mountain wheatears keeping an eye on hikers from above.
